Claude for Startups: a free year of Claude Team, who qualifies and the fine print

Claude for Startups gives a free year of Claude Team (up to 5 Premium seats) and $1,000 in API credits. Who qualifies, how to apply, the fine print.

Claude for Startups is Anthropic's program that, since its expansion on October 6, 2026, offers a free year of Claude Team (up to five Premium seats), $1,000 in API credits and partner offers. At list price, what Anthropic puts in adds up to about $7,000. But it is not "free Claude for startups": it is three separate offers, each with its own rule, and it pays to separate them before you apply.

    What changed on October 6

During SF Tech Week, Anthropic expanded Claude for Startups. There are now three offers with three rules:

    1. A year of Claude Team, up to five Premium seats.
    2. $1,000 in API credits.
    3. Partner offers, with discounts from other companies worth "up to" $45,000 according to the official page.

The mix of the three is what produces the big headlines. That is why it is worth taking them one at a time.

The three buckets and their rules

Claude Team. A free year, up to five Premium seats, but only for organizations that are new to Team. If you already have a Team plan, you are out.

API credits. The $1,000 expires six months after you receive it and only works on Anthropic's API through the Console, not on Bedrock or Vertex.

Partner offers. These are discounts and credits on other companies' tools, not money or Claude credits.

How to apply step by step

    1. Requirements: a company founded less than five years ago, or one that raised funding in the last two, venture-backed or not.
    2. Account: an account in the Claude Console and a company email whose domain matches your website. With a personal email you stop at the door.
    3. Form: go to the program page, sign in to the Console and describe in a few lines what you are building.
    4. Wait: according to the page, most replies arrive within minutes and a manual review takes two to three business days.
    5. Claim: if approved, you claim each bucket separately: seats, credits and partner offers. If you were already a member, you do not need to apply again.

The math: what it is really worth

According to U.S. government data cited by third parties, about half of new businesses close before their fifth year; that figure was not verified at the primary source. In that stretch, every dollar of tooling matters.

A Premium Team seat costs $100 a month with annual billing. For twelve months that is $1,200, and for five seats, $6,000. Add the $1,000 in API credits and it is $7,000 at list price. Paying month to month it would be $7,500 plus the $1,000: $8,500. This is list value, not money in your account.

    Three use cases (WAiBOT-AI's analysis)

These are our own analysis, not official Anthropic cases.

    • A solo founder with Claude Code. A booking app for beauty salons, built on weekends with one Premium seat. Premium gives five times the usage of the Standard plan, so she does not run out of quota mid-project. That is $1,200 a year that does not come out of her pocket while she is not billing yet.
    • A four-person agency with Claude Cowork. Four Team seats to build each month's client reports. Team includes Claude Code and Cowork, so what used to be two subscriptions is one, and the whole team works in the same space with the same instructions.
    • An API product with voice. A voice assistant for clinics that uses the $1,000 in API credits to test and serve its first customers, and takes ElevenLabs from the partners (twelve months free and 33 million characters) for the voice. The clock is ticking: credits expire at six months.

Premium or Standard: which one fits

During the free year it does not matter; it matters in month thirteen. Standard costs $20 a month with annual billing and Premium, $100. Premium gives five times the usage, so per unit of usage it costs the same. If your team is three developers living in Claude Code all day, Premium wins because the quota runs out. If it is five people who use it a few hours, Standard goes further: five seats cost $1,200 a year versus $6,000.

    Who it is not for

    • Anyone already paying for a Team plan: the offer is only for organizations new to Team.
    • Anyone running Claude through Bedrock or Vertex, because the credits do not apply there.
    • A company older than five years that never raised capital.
    • Anyone without a company email on their own domain.

Free is not the same as costless

Applying takes minutes; adopting it takes hours. Someone has to own the account, create the spaces, decide which tasks go to Claude and write the instructions. WAiBOT-AI's estimate is a couple of afternoons for one person, not a click. To see how the scheduled tasks that agency would use work, read Claude Cowork in the cloud.

Is it a trap? The objection

Someone will think they hook you for a year and then charge you. They are right about one part: the official page does not say what happens when the year ends or how much you will be charged. But hooking is not the same as trapping: it is a decision you can make in cold blood. If five Premium seats at list price are $6,000 a year, the question is whether your team produces more than that with them. If not, drop to Standard or cancel before the year ends.

    The catch behind "$50,000+"

The claim going around is that the program is worth "more than $50,000". That figure bundles three very different things. The $7,000 comes from Anthropic, at list price. The $45,000 is "up to" that amount in offers from other companies, mostly percentage discounts or free months, not money deposited. And the extra $100,000 in credits is separate: it depends on your venture fund being a partner. The practical takeaway: count the $7,000 and treat the rest as bonuses if they help you.

    What actually breaks

    1. You get rejected or sent to manual review over an email that does not match your site's domain.
    2. Your organization already existed on Team: the offer does not apply and there is no way to convert it.
    3. The $1,000 in API credits expires at six months: if your product takes eight to ship, you lose the last two. The limit is not money, it is time.

How to apply it in your business?

    1. Check that your company is under five years old or raised funding in the last two.
    2. Open the Console with an email on your own domain.
    3. Apply with a concrete description of what you are building.
    4. Set a six-month date to spend the credits and plan day one.
    5. From the partner offers, pick only the two you were already going to pay for.

And the year-two math, at list price with five Premium seats, is $6,000: decide before month ten.
